Abstract
The American population has become more racially and ethnically diverse. Pre-licensure nursing students must have the knowledge, skill, and attitude to meet the needs of this diverse patient population. The purpose of this study was to educate pre-licensure nursing students on the concept of cultural humility using standardized patients from diverse cultural backgrounds in simulation experiences. The 27 students in this study were enrolled in a traditional nursing program in the southern U.S. This one-group quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design used Foronda’s Cultural Humility Scale. These students completed this scale (pretest), participated in simulation experiences with standardized patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, and then completed this scale again (posttest). The paired-sample t test compared the differences between the pretest and posttest scores. This study demonstrated an overall increase in posttest cultural humility scores among participants on average, a difference of six points, and the null hypothesis was rejected. The recommendations for future research include the need to replicate the results of this study in a university located in a larger metropolitan area and to utilize participants who have experienced cultural diversity within their communities. It would also be beneficial if this quantitative study included qualitative elements, such as capturing the thoughts and feelings of the participants. Additionally, I would recommend that this study include nursing student participants from associate degree in nursing programs. Lastly, this study should be duplicated using an alternative cultural humility scale in a pretest–posttest design.
