Abstract

This nonexperimental, quantitative correlational study examined the association between nursing faculty’s experience with and perceptions of faculty-to-faculty incivility (FFI) within faith-based nursing (FBN) programs and assessed the extent those perceptions may be influenced or predicted by their personal faith affiliation. This study is the first of its kind to focus on incivility in FBN programs and examine the association between incivility and faculty member’s faith affiliations. A convenience sample of 102 faculty members from faith-based residential undergraduate nursing programs in the US completed the Workplace Incivility/Civility Survey via Qualtrics. Results showed that 61% of participants perceived FFI as not a problem at all or a mild problem. Unclear role expectations and power imbalances were the most commonly cited contributing factors. No significant association was found between perceptions of incivility and personal faith affiliation, suggesting that faculty who subscribe to a faith-based worldview may perceive incivility similarly. These findings indicate that while incivility persists in nursing academia, it is less frequent and perceived as less problematic in FBN programs than in previous studies conducted with non-FBN program faculty. Recommendations for further research include larger sample sizes, comparisons to current studies on non-FBN program incivility, and the development of interventions to foster civil culture, specifically with a focus on creating faith-based solutions to incivility. Understanding faculty experiences with and perceptions of uncivil encounters will enable nursing academic leaders to better support their faculty in addressing uncivil situations.
