Theoretical Proposal
Description
Background: Primary Dysmenorrhea is a gynecological condition that affects many women worldwide. It is characterized by painful menstrual cramping and can result in decreased quality of life. Omega 3 fatty acid supplements have been proposed as an alternative treatment method to reduce severity of dysmenorrhea.
Methods: The Prisma method was used to conduct an integrative literature review of Pub Med, EBSCO, and Google Scholar Databases.
Results: Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation has been shown to reduce dysmenorrhea pain and severity.
Conclusions: Omega 3 supplementation is a viable alternative to conventional treatments methods for dysmenorrhea. This is ideal for women who do not want to use non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), pain medication, or birth control to deal with dysmenorrhea pain.
