Abstract

Nathan Hale and American Revolutionary War espionage may be just like any topic; however, it is important to examine as many sources as possible thoroughly on both espionage and Nathan Hale. Due to this, it is no different when looking at the study of Espionage throughout the Revolutionary War and the influential spies who made the American victory possible like Nathan Hale. Further on into the study of information on espionage throughout the war and its aftermath, it is also important to look back into the history of the war, even going as far as to examine the historical background of Nathan Hale and what made him want to join the fight for freedom. The words “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country,”1 are the central thesis surrounding the life and death of Nathan Hale and those words are oftentimes what most people think of when the name Nathan Hale is brought up in conversation. The overall direction of this research is to provide a clear, comprehensive, and straightforward understanding of Nathan Hale’s life and death by cross-examining many different angles and perspectives. Therefore, not only considering the events and precise moments of his death but also the moments leading up to his ultimate sacrifice not only of his life but also the life he gave for the fight for America’s independence and the notion of a nation that he only imagined.
