Abstract

This paper discusses important international issues related to the region of the Mediterranean Sea particularly focusing on Italy and North African security issues. Security and stability issues were researched. This region is interconnected through important geo-economic issues such as the gas pipelines that supply Italy with methane gas pass through the seabed of the Mediterranean Sea, connecting North Africa with Italy and the whole of Europe. In particular there are the gas pipelines that from Libya and Tunisia, across the Mediterranean Sea, arrive in Italy, supplying the entire nation with methane gas at a good price. Italy has promoted the Mattei Plan which consists of a series of economic agreements with many North African, Central African and Persian Gulf nations. The Mediterranean region also faces security threats from human, labor and drug trafficking and serious migration issues. In the capital of Sudan, refugees are transferred to subsequent traffickers, who happen to be Eritreans as well. The Nigerian mafia plays a significant role in facilitating the illegal transportation of individuals from Western Africa to Europe, along with engaging in the illicit drug trade and prostitution in Italy. Food security area also discussed. US and Italian NATO involvement in the region is analyzed as is EU frontex border policy.
