Abstract

iPad is a popular device commonly used an educational tool, yet little information is available about how iPad can be used to supplement gaps in music education in elementary classes. It is widely accepted that music education increases student achievement across multiple curriculums: therefore, any techniques and tools available to deliver music lessons that may close gaps in access to quality music education are important to study and understand. Through qualitative research techniques, this study will examine and analyze the efficacy of using iPad in music lessons. Students will access music history and theory through apps installed on iPad. Students will also be able to create and compose music through apps such as GarageBand, which will provide data to analyze student engagement in music lessons as well as artifacts for students and teachers to share. Observations of performances will be made and recorded using iPad as musical instruments. Students will progress through a series of lessons in class using iPad and GarageBand. The study will examine the effect of perceptions of students using this technology, any increase in awareness of the value and efficiency of resources, and observations of the students for other potential benefits. Through surveys, assessments, and observation over a period of time, the study may affect perspectives on music education and the use of technology.
