Abstract

The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to determine if there was a difference in sharing expertise, sharing leadership, and/or supra-practitioner behaviors among the teachers of the nine Seventh-day Adventist Unions of the North American Division. This study is important because it meets an important gap in teacher leadership understanding, both within the broad context of education and specifically within the Seventh-day Adventist educational system. The sample was composed of 264 Seventh-day Adventist full-time teachers from across the North American Division (with the exception of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Canada due to privacy laws prohibiting participation) who did not hold formal leadership roles within the school. Data were collected using the Teacher Leadership Inventory survey instrument. The results of the one-way analysis of variance did not show statistically significant differences in the teacher leadership qualities of sharing expertise and supra-practitioner among the Unions of the North American Division. However, the results of the one-way analysis of variance found a statistically significant difference in the teacher leadership quality of sharing leadership. Teacher leadership, as measured by the Teacher Leadership Inventory factors of sharing expertise, sharing leadership, and supra-practitioner, is uniform among the Unions of the North American Division. Future research should investigate the levels of teacher leadership among the Unions of the North American Division and should determine ways to include the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Canada in future teacher leadership studies of the North American Division.
