Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the current training of school based mental health (SBMH) professionals working with individuals with dual diagnosed individuals with Intellectual/Developmental disabilities and mental health disorders. A triangulated data approach of survey, focus group and journal reflection was completed providing opportunities for the SBMH professionals to describe their professional training to work with the population and expound on their experiences providing services in the K12 school setting. Results from all three data points indicated a large deficit in training options available specifically for professionals working with those who have an IDD/MH diagnosis. Results also outlined three themes/10 subthemes that were unearthed through inductive coding processes. Future recommendations for further research include targeting collegiate coursework as well as post-secondary, professional development training to meet the needs of the SBMH professionals working with dual diagnosed individuals in schools.
