Abstract
This qualitative study uses a descriptive phenomenological approach to examine the experience and insights of Generation X and Millennial software engineers employed by the United States government on their preferred methods for tacit knowledge transfer. Phenomenological examination allows for the structured exploration and documentation of common themes and fundamental structures across the generational cohorts. Participants were selected based on inclusion criteria that produced a sample that shared common training and career paths split evenly across the two generations. Using Colaizzi’s Seven Step Method for analysis, the researcher led semi-structured interviews producing data that provided a clear description of the themes and shared experiences of the two generations of software engineers. Software engineers develop knowledge over a career that is not intuitive and difficult to pass through traditional methods. As Generation X begins to retire and leave the workforce, the tools for tacit knowledge transfer require additional examination. Millennials have developed technical skills using different methods of learning when compared to the preceding generation. The qualitative coding and analysis produced eight themes across the four research questions that indicate both generations understand the problem well and have the desire to work through the technology-induced barriers to developed common practices and tools usage. The findings of this study may lead to better understanding and aid in the investment decisions for future knowledge transfer investments by organizations.
