Abstract

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand faculty experiences with evaluation practices for teachers within two-year higher education institutions in the Southeast region of the United States. The theory guiding this study is transformational leadership theory as it aids in understanding the problem that some faculty experience with evaluation practices established by ineffective leadership. By researching transformational leadership theory, researchers have determined that leadership style influences faculty experiences with teacher assessment procedures like evaluation and observation practices. The Central Research Question is, how are teaching evaluation experiences of community college faculty influenced by perceived supervisor leadership style? The hermeneutic phenomenological research design was selected to answer the research questions because it provides an opportunity to describe and interpret the experiences, relationships, and associations between community college faculty and academic supervisors concerning evaluation practices. Participants in this study are faculty members of various content areas who teach courses at Arbor Community College and have lived experiences with the phenomenon of faculty experiences with evaluation practices. Three data collection methods, including first-round individual interviews, second-round individual interviews, and journal prompts, were used. Two overall themes were identified and used to synthesize, analyze, and ultimately describe and interpret the phenomenon's essence, using the data analysis framework of Van Manen. The thematic findings for this study were Transformational Leadership Style and Non-Transformational Leadership Style.
