Abstract

This case study describes the transition planning for parents collaborating with school and community professionals for students with intellectual disabilities (ID) at the high school level in Guam. The theory guiding this study is Schlosberg’s transition theory, as it supports parents in decision-making to help students with ID adapt to change. This study reviews how collaborative teams can be between schools and the community. The methodology examines parents’ interviews and observations and reviews the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) documents. An intrinsic case study is appropriate to understand parents’ perspectives in transition planning for high school students with intellectual disabilities. The convenient sample size will be pulled from the population of 1,227 Guam DOE high schools with different ethnicities covering parts of Asia and the Pacific of Micronesia. Data collection consists of individual interviews with parents who have experienced or are going through the transition planning process with a collaborative team of school and community professionals. The data comprised different themes and subthemes. Themes and subthemes reflecting on parents working with school and community professionals are discussed. The results were determined on how effective transition plans were being provided to serve students with intellectual disabilities.
