Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative research using multiple case studies is to examine barriers which affect the reporting of workplace violence incidents in logistics service corporations. Reporting is a crucial element in the prevention and mitigation of workplace violence. When workplace violence fails to be reported, the true extent of the violence is not reported within the data. The review of current literature discovered different approaches to mitigate workplace violence by organizations, however, lacked the depth of identifying barriers which restrict reporting. This qualitative, multiple-case study addressed the barriers to workplace violence reporting within logistics service industry, specifically, freight warehouses. The general systems theory was the conceptual framework for this research. The data was collected from interviews with logistics service industry employees. The interviews were transcribed and coded to identify themes. Emergent themes included identified barriers to reporting workplace violence in the logistics service industry. The implications of this study for mitigating workplace violence reporting include the need for logistics service corporations to reinforce management engagement and reporting avenues in the mitigation of incidence. This study contributes to the mitigation of workplace violence reporting barriers to increase reporting of incidence in the logistics service industry. Future studies are recommended to examine the relationship between adequate reporting and reduction of workplace violence incidents. The results concluded that most of the participants were reluctant to report incidence of workplace violence due to perceived personal barriers even though all the participants received workplace violence policy and reporting training during their employment tenure at logistics service industry employers.
