Abstract

This study explores how varying worship style preferences influence worship experiences, theological beliefs, and sense of belonging among clergy and congregants within the Chesapeake Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. While music and hymnody are integral to Adventist worship, differing stylistic preferences can lead to tensions, satisfaction gaps, and fragmented community life. Despite the formative role of congregational singing in shaping religious identity, little research has examined these dynamics within the Adventist context. Using a mixed-methods ethnographic case study design, the research combines qualitative interviews with 26 pastors and quantitative survey data from 257 congregants across diverse churches. It investigates the criteria pastors use for song selection, the theological and cultural rationale behind worship structures, and how congregants perceive the role of congregational singing in shaping beliefs and fostering community. A significant finding reveals a disconnect between pastors’ theological intentions and congregants’ understanding—fewer than one-third of congregants consistently grasp the purpose behind worship elements. Despite stylistic diversity presenting challenges, the study identifies opportunities for fostering deeper engagement, theological reflection, and unity. These findings offer practical insights for pastors, worship leaders, and administrators striving to cultivate inclusive, spiritually vibrant worship environments that embrace both tradition and innovation, contributing to a more holistic understanding of worship leadership and identity formation in current Adventist congregational life.
