Abstract

The purpose of this correlational study was to assess the relationship between the constructs of prayer and marriage. Specifically, this study sought to answer the question of whether or not the direction of prayer, inward, outward, and upward was significantly correlated with marital satisfaction. Two hundred and one participants who were married, at least eighteen years of age, and who identified as Christian participated in the study. They completed a demographic questionnaire, the Prayer Thought Scale (PTS), and the ENRICH Couple Satisfaction Scale (CSS) online. Results indicated that there was no significant correlation between direction of prayer and marital satisfaction. Implications applying to Christian couples, lay counselors, and professional counselors who seek to integrate spiritual practices into treatment are discussed.
