Abstract
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to determine whether military and civilian leaders at the United States Army Force Command (FORSCOM) have transformational and sensegiving skills to influence Brigade Combat Teams to support the Army's Mission Essential Training Task (MET-T) and Warfighting Function (WFF) training objectives. The theory that guided this study is Maslow hierarchy of needs. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is widely used in public organizations as a framework to assess employees’ needs. Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory suggested that subordinates are only motivated to support an organization's strategic goals once their psychological and physical needs are satisfied. Also, the study examined whether military and civilian leaders understand the essential principles of Maslow's five pyramid structure, making it possible for soldiers to become motivated toward higher goals. The pyramid structure of needs discussed in this study is physical, security, social, esteem, and self-actualization. Additionally, this study used three data collection strategies that compose of interviews, focus group, and document analysis to address the research questions. Face-to-face and focus group interviews responded to open-ended questions that lasted 45 to 60 minutes. In addition, document analysis captured qualitative data from a holistic approach. Furthermore, participants in this study are sixteen military and civilian leaders from various departments at FORSCOM. Lastly, data analysis is conducted using the NVivo CADQDAS software and multiple coding analysis techniques to develop themes and codes from interview data collected.
