Abstract
The purpose of this project was to examine hormonal therapy among women between the ages of 40 and 55 within a clinical setting. This project assessed women’s understanding of hormonal therapy for various treatments as well as the risks. The intervention utilized the teach-back method. The project also included the 10 essential elements the provider needs to be competent in the teach-back method. A pre- and post-test were given to patients to measure improvement of knowledge and understanding. The goal is to improve patients’ understanding of these treatments and to help them ask questions if they do not fully understand something. The data analysis showed that 0.7% of patients answered all questions on the pretest correctly. After education was provided by the researcher, patients answered 80% of the questions correctly on the post-test. Therefore, there is significant evidence to conclude that the teach-back method as an intervention can improve health literacy among patient populations. The sustainability of this project entails incorporating the teach-back method into employee training at the clinic where data were collected, as well as having staff utilize this when teaching patients about health conditions or medications.
