Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide recommendations for improving vocal pedagogy practices in both collegiate and secondary-level education, emphasizing fair and equitable treatment alongside the evolution of teaching practices from the 1950s to the current classroom environment. Vocal education, a cornerstone of music instruction, has been shaped by the changing educational landscape over the decades, presenting educators and students with unique challenges, including the need for inclusive and culturally sensitive practices. In response to these challenges, a central research question arises regarding the evolution of vocal pedagogy and its potential for improvement within the context of fair, equitable, and inclusive teaching methods. The research methodology outlined for this study encompassed an applied methods approach. Quantitative data was collected through surveys distributed on various social media platforms, targeting a sample of individuals engaged in music education. Concurrently, qualitative data from in-depth interviews chosen by survey respondents focused on the changing dynamics of vocal pedagogy across different eras, addressing historical shifts and the present need for fairness and inclusivity in vocal instruction. The primary recommendations included increasing professional development on cultural inclusivity, improving technology integration in vocal pedagogy, and encouraging flexible, non-gendered vocal classifications. Additionally, fostering student-centered learning and autonomy, prioritizing mental well-being and holistic vocal health were essential to support students’ vocal and emotional development. These recommendations outline a path toward a more inclusive, responsive, and supportive approach to vocal pedagogy in the 21st century.
