Description
Management of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery patients postoperatively is a pharmacologically complex process that involves the careful management and administration of various medications. Leading guideline-producing organizations like the ACC/AHA and EACTS give guidance to providers about the pharmacological management of these patients. However, with nursing staff being the ones implementing the care itself, it is important for them to understand the guidelines so that they can be implemented safely and effectively. The ACC/AHA and EACTS guidelines on the postoperative management of CABG patients mostly align in recommendation, but diverge in a few areas. Nurses should be aware of these clinical practice guidelines and how they affect nursing practice. Nursing care and considerations in the pharmacological categories of antiplatelet therapy, beta-blocker therapy, antiarrhythmic therapy, anti-infective therapy, and long-term reinfarction prevention strategies are discussed in the care of postoperative CABG patients. Understanding these medications and their role in post-CABG care is key to providing evidence-based, guideline-directed nursing care.
