Description
This paper investigates the impact of Kennedy’s assassination on his legacy. Kennedy had a presidency fill with struggles and setbacks, yet he is remembered as one of the greatest presidents of all time. This paper briefly looks at the accomplishments and failures of the Kennedy administration, his family life, and ultimately how his assassination affected his legacy in American popular memory. President John F. Kennedy is one of the most iconic presidents in modern American history. America will never forget its young, handsome leader who was abruptly struck down by an assassin’s bullet. His name is enshrined in monuments, airports, highways, and in the memories of the American people. Yet, he was a man who only served a little over a thousand days in office and who achieved little in terms of policy. At the time of his death, he was mourned by friends and foes alike and hailed as a martyr of the policy initiatives he never pursued. He was quickly placed upon a pedestal and was hailed as the greatest of his time. However, his presidency does not match the perception. He made his share of blunders in foreign policy and was a cautious president domestically. Moreover, his image as the young, energetic pioneer of the New Frontier was lacking in that he was one of the most sickly presidents. His image as a loving, family man is inconsistent with the fact that he was grossly unfaithful to his wife. Despite these shortcomings, he is remembered as one of America’s greatest presidents.
