Description
This presentation discusses how research can be used to build true-to-life characters, worlds, and stories while maintaining its narrative. I Haven’t Time is a 1950s period drama about a present-but-absent mother who takes her obnoxious 8-year-old son for granted, until he is hit by a car. The film is based on a short radio drama written by Christian evangelist and storyteller Ethel Barrett. Her objective was to reimagine what her own life would be like if she neglected her sons for selfish reasons. In this story she places herself in the role of the protagonist. The analysis of this film seeks to reveal that every story, whether fiction or non-fiction, must be founded upon research. Research being derived from an examination of humanity and the universal laws therein. This analysis also delves into the modern desire for realism and how that is just a cry for humanity that which comes from God. When the search for truthful storytelling is put at the helm God’s nature is always revealed through it. It is the objective of the Christian filmmaker to tell stories not as man sees them but as God sees them via truth. Research is just the beginning of revealing God’s truths which makes it imperative that that be the foundation of every story.
