Description

This study aims to answer the question: What impact can psychological counseling have on immigrant minors? Previous research done on this topic has shown that many immigrant youths are encouraged by their family members not to talk and to forget about traumatic experiences that might have happened prior to their migration or during their journey to the United States. This encouragement of trauma repression can lead to the development of anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder, which negatively impacts any person’s well-being; even more so a child who is in a new country, learning a new language, and adapting to a different culture. Studies that have researched the impacts of providing psychological counseling within schools to immigrant students have found a significant improvement in the student’s mental health and their adaptation to the new environment. This study seeks to further explore the impacts of providing individual psychological counseling to immigrant youths, by analyzing existing research on this topic and by interviewing experts in the field. The conclusions reached by this quest show that immigrant minors could greatly benefit from receiving psychological counseling upon their arrival in the United States, and that school-based counseling provides a safe space for the children to heal from the trauma they have experienced in the past and it also provides them with the skills required to adapt to the new environment and culture.
