Description

Problem Statement The research problem stated that I was to conceptualize an original museum exhibition and create promotional materials, mock displays of the exhibit, and utilize environmental graphic principles. First, I had to determine the topic, then name and visual identity, and finally I took those elements and created both display spaces and additional promotional materials. I was required to create mockups of two main exhibit walls, an entrance wall, one outdoors advertisement, and design a custom handout. Since this was a project mostly devoted to environmental design, most of the designs were made with intention of connecting with its audience in a way that leaves a lasting impact on the viewers’ lives. Communication objective The overarching goal of this exhibit is not only to display an exhibit but to invoke feeling and action in the individual. This is why I chose the topic “Hands of Extinction: Species Earth Lost Due to Human Involvement,” which is an exhibit that focuses on prominent animal species that have gone extinct in the last two hundred years due to factors that relate in some way to human actions or involvement in their respective ecosystems. By putting humanity’s past mistakes, so to speak, on display, the goal is to invoke action and awareness of the carelessness of humankind’s destruction of ecosystems worldwide, so as to inspire people to support wildlife rescue efforts. A small section at the end of the exhibit showcases species that have almost gone extinct, as to further tie into the idea that this is an ongoing problem that needs resolution. Visual Solution The final product of this research project includes museum layout sketches, a visual identity page, two interior mockups of the exhibit, an exterior advertisement, and a narrative literature piece in the form of a fold-able handout. The visual identity utilizes color theory in that the primary colors, orange, black, and white, invoke the harshness and urgency of the topic, while the secondary color scheme, dark and light green, symbolize the natural element of the subject. I also used ragged line work as a supporting aesthetic and hand drawn exhibit illustrations to tie into the balance of harshness and natural environments. In the imagery of the exhibition, the extinct species are in black and white next to a colored environment, while the critically endangered species are colored in but against a black and white environment. This is meant to represent a visual distinction between the two categories, extinct species and critically endangered species, while also reinforcing the idea that they are not so far apart. Initially, the exhibition had two different styles of presentations: a traditional style with the exhibits being displayed on the wall as a physical medium, and a modern style were there would be screens mounted on the walls in which the visitors could view featured articles about various subjects. It was another feature that was meant to tie into the idea of past mistakes versus future hope, like the extinct species versus the ones that can be saved. I was very happy with the results of these digital exhibits, however, due to the difficulty of finding adequate mockups for screens mounted on walls, I had to scrap the idea entirely. I have included a version of an unused asset of the exhibit mockup where the digital articles are present, although it is displayed just like the other mockups, making it impossible to tell that it’s supposed to be a screen and thus defeating its purpose. Production Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Capture were digital programs that I relied on heavily during the production of this project. Adobe Capture was used to digitally import hand-drawn elements into the digital work. Adobe Illustrator was also used during the methodology creation. Illustrations drawn by hand are prominently featured in this project. The reasoning was to not only use the hand drawn illustration style to tie into the topic and theme, but to also challenge myself with an art form that at the time I was not fully confident in. For the handout, I went to FedEx for professional printing, and used scoring techniques to fold the handout.
