Boyd Rist was born on February 7, 1946 and grew up in South Dakota. He graduated from the University of South Dakota and received his doctorate from the University of Virginia. He was hired into the history department of Liberty University in 1973. Dr. Rist has been the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, the Dean of Faculty, the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Provost at Liberty University. He is currently working as a Senior Academic Consultant to the Provost for Liberty University.
