Abstract

I never liked school. I did, however, like certain components of school. I loved library days. I attended an overpopulated, elementary school on the south side of Chicago that required classrooms to take turns sharing the small library. My kindergarten class was allowed to attend the library mid-week. I looked forward to library day because library day provided me with an opportunity to read and be read to, which was the highlight of my kindergarten life. The books that the librarian read to my class spoke to me. The librarian—Mrs. Jones read with such enthusiasm that I often imagined myself part of the story.
