Abstract

The art of storytelling is an ancient one, and yet one that can forever be portrayed in fresh and exciting ways. Contained within this body of writing is an artist statement introducing myself as an author. It is a window into important segments of my life journey that have contributed to my decision to write as my primary method of creative expression. Of primary importance is the use of compelling characters to create movement and tension in a story. The most complex and gripping characters are often those who display character bents or internal struggles that are common to all of mankind. This work examines the art of character creation through the analytic lens of cognitive analysis. This psychoanalytical lens examines how our brain, our method of thought and our belief system influence how we read and interpret literature. The last portion of this creative offering is a writing sample demonstrating my skill and ability to craft compelling characters who are also believable and to whom the reader can easily relate.
