Abstract
Music plays a vital role in today’s church. Throughout history, Christian songwriters have written hymns that have been passed down through generations of believers. In recent years, contemporary Christian songs have replaced traditional hymns in many churches. While a variety of music styles can be effectively used in worship, the disappearance of the traditional hymn robs churchgoers of the theological depth and timeless truths that live within many of these old hymns. These beautiful, soul-stirring hymns could be forgotten if action isn’t taken to preserve them for future generations of worshipers.
This thesis examines ways to preserve the heritage of hymns while engaging with the realities of shifting worship styles and preferences in today’s evangelical Christian church. Research was conducted to explore content from various researchers, scholars, worship leaders, and musicians that center around six key areas of study:
- The historical significance of hymns
- Data surrounding the shift in worship styles
- Potential dangers presented by shifting worship styles
- The role of theology in worship
- How to create a successful balance between traditional hymns and modern worship
- Visual trends in worship resources and albums
After analyzing this research through a literature review, case studies, and visual analyses, a solution was proposed to help to re-introduce traditional hymns to a modern audience. Research revealed that the use of technology is prominent in today’s churches. Song lyrics are typically projected or displayed on screens. Worship teams often use iPads rather than printed music. A lot of service planning is done through the use of digital tools. Because of this, the proposed visual solutions will be primarily digital and include resources for worship leaders that focus on incorporating traditional hymns into a modern worship setting.
