Abstract
The purpose of the study is to determine teachers' perceptions of multicultural education and its potential benefits in Sumter County. The purpose of this research is to understand the perspectives and approaches to preparing for the implementation of multiculturalism among public school music programs in Sumter, South Carolina. The rationale for this research is that there is a gap in the literature on multicultural implementation in music education in South Carolina. With proper technological implementation, multiculturalism could help prepare music educators to teach a culturally diverse group of students. As a result of the study, the researcher aims to gain insight into teachers' perspectives on their preparation for implementing and practicing multiculturalism in public school music classrooms in Sumter, South Carolina. Participants in the study will be given a survey to determine their individual perceptions of the role of multiculturalism in their music classrooms. Semi-structured interviews are the second method of data collection. The third method of data collection is focus groups. A qualitative analysis was conducted to identify codes and themes that help categorize information similar across the data. Qualitative data on teachers’ perceptions of preservice programs added a human element to the study. Information from various perspectives on music education across several U.S. regions was consulted. Elements of curriculum and instruction were represented in the research to discern a holistic understanding of standards. Qualitative data highlights the importance of preservice programs in effectively preparing music educators.
