Abstract
This qualitative case study explored the challenges leaders face in motivating employees in the service sector that threaten a productive work environment in the educational sector. The problem to be addressed is the challenges leaders face in motivating employees within the service sector that threaten a productive work environment. The purpose of this study is to explore how leadership strategies influence employee motivation and productivity, particularly within the education industry, where leaders often contend with stressors such as workplace change, low morale, and burnout. Guided by a constructive constructivist paradigm, the research employed a qualitative multiple-case study design, using semi-structured interviews and public documentation to capture participants' subjective perspectives. The research presented data from 18 participants, who were asked 13 interview questions about challenges leaders face in motivating employees in the service sector that threaten a productive work environment (See Appendix A & B). To maintain confidentiality, pseudonyms (P001-P0018) were used in place of participants' names to protect their identities. The coding process revealed six themes: (T1) organizational and systemic barriers to motivation, (T2) communication and psychological safety drive motivation, (T3) adaptive leadership practices to drive motivation, (T4) goal clarity to increase motivation, (T5) intrinsic motivation and purpose alignment, (T6) extrinsic motivation. The research questions were used to help the researcher relay the importance of motivation and its role in fostering a productive work environment. The findings were supported by figures, tables, and diagrams, along with scholarly sources and participant data, to ensure clarity and rigor. The results highlighted that leadership effectiveness relies on alignment among organizational culture and structure, and the meeting of employees' psychological needs.
