Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to help Korean churches create more effective retreats for the spiritual growth of their youth. Most of the youth in Korean churches participate in spiritual retreats during their summer and winter vacations. In the past, many of the youth converted or recovered their faith through retreats. Nowadays, the Korean youth are exposed to all sorts of secularized culture and media, which result in the deterioration of their spirituality. Therefore, it is a major challenge for youth ministry in Korean churches to have their youth experience personal spiritual growth at retreats. The writer has organized youth camps since 1996. For the past 20 years, his focus has been on the spiritual growth of individual participants in retreats. For this study, he first identified the concepts of the youth and spiritual growth and comparatively analyzed programs of major united youth camps in Korea. Further, he selected 20 indicators that estimate how much help the youth received from retreats in their spiritual growth and conducted a questionnaire survey with 300 young people from local churches who had participated in retreats. In conclusion, he investigates factors of united retreat programs necessary for the spiritual growth of the youth and suggests effective principles, methods, and models.
