Book covers have the difficult task of encompassing the themes and heart of a book with one picture. This one picture can even be the determining factor between someone buying that book or leaving it to stay perched on the bookstore’s shelf. My communication objective for this project was to effectively display Peter Pan’s story in a new/different way than what has been done before. Many cover illustrations for Peter Pan depict the main characters seen in the book. There is an abundance that display Peter Pan, Wendy, and Tinkerbell flying to or over Neverland. Alongside the protagonists, Captain Hook’s ship is another primary focal point that cover illustrations like to highlight. I wanted to challenge myself to stray away from these common depictions and create a new visual solution that still effectively displays the book’s contents. My visual solution landed on highlighting many various elements seen in the story, primarily Tick-Tock the Crocodile, the clock that makes him tick, Captain Hook’s hat, the Jolly Rogers’ flag, Michael Darling’s bear, and even a subtle version of Tinkerbell. I also displayed feathers throughout the design to represent the feather on Peter Pan’s hat. So, although Peter Pan may not be the focal point, he is still subtly shown in the cover and logo design. I also showed a map to represent the map of neverland and the adventure about to take place. I created this design entirely in Adobe Illustrator, basing the illustrations off the initial sketch I made. I created the back, spine, and cover all in one artboard. This ensured that all three parts of the book felt cohesive. Ultimately, I believe I did a good job in reimaging this classic tale into a new and unique design. This design can help readers see a new approach to the story, allowing the whimsy and hidden details to act as fun easter eggs to uncover. I would love to continue creating different book covers that reimagine stories and paint different pictures for new and old readers.
