Abstract
The extent of God’s love is a distorted concept. As the misguided world seeks to maximize God’s love apart from his holiness, some theological circles seek to minimize it in light of his sovereignty. Addressing one side of the issue, this paper examines the apostle John’s body of work and attempts to restore a proper balance. The purpose of this research is to define the extent of God’s love as represented in the Johannine corpus. It surveys and assesses the semantic range of the Greek word kosmos by evaluating the relevant texts. Through exploration of John’s comprehensive usage, it reveals tension, ambiguity and ultimately, clarity. While John is well known for his focus on love, it is through his use of the Greek word kosmos that he extends God’s love to humanity.
