Description

This paper examines the causes, effects, and proposes solutions to the current crisis of deepfake porn. Deepfake Porn has been defined by The Guardian in April of 2023 as synthetically created pornography. Dutch AI company, Sensity, concluded in 2023 that 96% of deepfake videos online are pornographic. Female celebrities have historically been the victim of deepfake porn but its newest target is the everyday person. This exploitation is unacceptable and means that nonconsensual sex is no longer limited to the physical realm. The two main causes of deepfake porn are toxic pornographic culture and unrestricted technological advancement in the modern era. From these causes, the effects have been extracted: pornographic harassment and prolonged trauma. After reviewing this background, this paper aims to look at various solutions that have both efficiency and simplicity. The solution for unrestricted technological advancement is two-fold. The first is to keep a watchdog mentality with reporting deepfake content online. The second is to contact state and federal representatives and lobby for legislation that restricts the release of deepfake videos and protects online civil freedom. In doing this, Senator Tim Kane has been the only respondent thus far. The solution to toxic pornographic culture is to hold those same representatives accountable by contacting news sources and spreading through word of mouth that the government is complicit. To solve the real-life effects on victims, the route is active resourcing to counseling services, specific deepfake helplines, and the Victims of Crime Act resources. This paper aims to prove that this issue can be minimized with the help of widescale and small efforts.
