Description

The presentation will give an overview of the findings and overall objective of research conducted by Kayla Strzalka. All the research has been done with the goal of creating a documentary that inspires hope through transformative stories and invites viewers into a cultural experience. The purpose of the documentary is to raise awareness as a part of the Kids Alive International in the Dominican Republic’s fundraising strategy in the future. Kids Alive International is an organization that believes “every child, even those with the most challenging needs, is a priority to God and far too many are overlooked, unheard, exploited, and threatened.” The presentation will start with a brief testimonial of the subject of the film, Jan Burkey. The research acts as a testimony of a particularly transformative story of the poverty in one barrio, called Palo Blanco, in the city of Jarabacoa in the La Vega providence of the Dominican Republic. With one faithful servant’s obedience, a school was founded and now thousands of children’s lives have been transformed. The research is ongoing and will cover 34 years of Jan Burkey’s, the founder of Fountain of Living Water School, life in the Dominican Republic working to bring renewal to children and families. It will then provide first-hand witness anecdotes and an articulation of an immersive experience. The project will inform the various ways in which we can interact with another culture and reveal, as image bearers of Christ, the transformation that is going on in the nations. This research brings awareness to the nation's need and inspires hope. When combined, education, family, food, and a relationship with Jesus can bring change to a community stuck in a cycle of poverty and violence.
